Designin December

Designin December 2019

Designin December 2019 is a  biggerannual competition created by Linda Maki of Nice dress thanks I made it. This is the first dress that has started my sewing adventure. I was super excited to enter this competition that I came across a week before the deadline. I was fortunate to be one of the fourteen finalists. I was going through and looking at the prizes on offer and I really liked the prize of a sewing pattern by the designer Sense and Sensibility and as luck would have it, that is the one I got, a final twist of faith, Linda wrote on her blog that she didn’t have a good feeling about having 13 prizes so added a 14th prize herself.

The dress I chose was a Jason Wu Asymmetric. The original dress was in a green herringbone fabric.

I already had a blue  broad herringbone cotton fabric I found at the Maybachufer market in Berlin which I used for the dress. I drafted the bodice using my measurements. The skirt has three panels. The back is two panels in an A line shape and the front panel is a half A-line and half extended rounded asymmetric panel, the remaining are A line.

As I was new to fine sewing at this stage I used any fabric I could find for my toile including an old bedsheet and net curtain. I am glad I did this as it took several tries to get the right drape.

As you can tell by the look on my face in these final photos, I was super pleased with how this dress turned out, a few people said they liked it better than the original as my neck line is not as narrow.
